Precious and semi-precious gemstones have been used since recorded history and probably before, for spiritual, emotional and physical healing. Alternative healers all over the world use gemstones today.
Throughout history gemstones have been utilized as powders or elixirs, worn, carried or placed on the body and in ceremonies or rituals. The popularity of holistic health and healing is bringing the use of gemstones once again into modern life.
What is the definition of a gemstone? Well, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gemstone says that :
A gemstone or gem (also called a precious or semi-precious stone, or jewel) is a piece of mineral, which, in cut and polished form, is used to make jewelry or other adornments. However certain rocks, (such as lapis lazuli) and organic materials (such as amber or jet) are not minerals, but are still used for jewelry, and are therefore often considered to be gemstones as well.
Advanced thinkers such as quantum physicists comprehend the vibrational nature of matter and attest to the electromagnetic radiations of gems. All Gems are unique. A gem emanates a magnetically charged force that can influence any organic electrical body that is in its immediate sphere of influence.
There are many sites that feature gemstones and their properties, and I would like to provide a sort of synthesis here. For example http://www.soularenergy.com puts it this way:
“The energy field of different gemstones is influenced by geometrical form, colour and subtle vibration. Each stone is made up of minute crystals which are in constant motion thus emitting an energy signature or frequency. The gemstone’s colour also plays a dynamic role in the stone’s healing energy. The play of light and colour can stimulate or calm; purify or heal.”
How can therapeutic gems accomplish all this? Gemstones are formed over eons, often at high pressure, the Earth’s gemstones embody intense concentrations of energy. Today, we employ the energetic and physical properties of gemstones in lasers to perform delicate surgeries and in computers to propel information around the globe. Similarly, we can use certain gemstones to focus and amplify the body’s innate energies to uplift our health.

I will be talking about color and how it relates to our energy in my next blog .

I will be discussing more gemstones and their very interesting specific properties, along with the properties of metals that are intrinsic to jewelry design.
